Possession based football is a style that requires certain players who are drilled to play in a particular way.
Recognising that you are playing a team with that style does not mean that you accept defeat. It means coming up with an approach to try and beat them. In most cases that won't be by trying to out possess them if you don't have the players to that. It might be by counter-attacking, for example.

We had a plan on Saturday it was just that the players failed to execute it.
