Royal Mail insurance may not pay compo for what an item is worth though, and there's

the main problem.

Say you buy a bargain bit of antique jewellery in a charity shop for ?5. Sell it on ebay for ?200. Send it Special Delivery as strongly advised and horror of horrors it goes missing in the post!

You'd think, no probs, you can prove what the item sold for on ebay and you sent it special delivery so you'll be able to claim your ?200 back. Not so! RM will only pay out on your loss, the cost to you. If it cost you more than you sold it for, they'll pay the selling price. They pay the lower value. You need to provide a receipt/invoice showing what the item cost you. If you kept your receipt you'll get a fiver, if you didn't you'll get diddly squat!

It's rare that SD items go missing but it does happen more often than you would think. We bought an ipod touch on ebay, was sent SD and was lost in post. Had tracking number etc and 'vanished' midway between sender and us.

I only post to UK on ebay, but I always send my items at least by recorded even if sold for only a couple of quid. I'm always mindful that I need to keep receipts and that once in a blue moon I may have one of my items go missing.

I haven't sold for a while on ebay so haven't yet got round to looking at alternatives who may pay out on the sale price...
