Not sure you'll get a DSLR for ?300

Add ?100 to it and you'll be able to get an entry level Canon or Nikon, both of which will be very good. The difference between even a good compact and a basic DSLR can be incredible.

I got a Canon 600D with an image stabilising lens for ?419 from Jessops and it's great.
