You don't have to be the "better" you. Both what you refer to as the better and the worse

are both just aspects of you. Just try to be happy with who you are and then it's amazing how everything else falls in place. No, I don't mean absolutely perfect as in all the spiritual bollocks but in general and that really helps you cope with all the stuff that happens in life and lets you put it into context.

As Mrs. In Holland so correctly says, there's only one person who can actually make you happy or sad, and that's you. If you think about it, it's simply a fact. No matter what has happened to you it's your reaction which makes you happy or sad. Nobody can actually follow that mantra all the time but it is a good one to remember and try to follow as often as you can. Why waste years dwelling on stuff which has already happened and you can do nothing about ? Sadly that damned Einstein shows we can only move forward. No going back.
