Well this is how it will go....

1) Recreational use. Not great but not too much to worry about

2) Start to fall into it but doesn't recognise that it is not still just a bit recreational now and again

3) Denial

4) Too late

Sounds like he's around 2 or 3 so there's still a chance but you'd need his mates to chat together to agree on one consistent message which you all need to confront him with independently before he's ever going to think about it.
