the criticism isn't directed AT Flem

as pointed out he isn't booed on the pitch etc. It is simple expressed on places like this (which people are entitled to do by your own admission) so it is easy for Flem to avoid if he can't handle it. So how does it have any impact whatsoever on his performance?? As I understand it (can't be bothered to check back) your boss told you people were complaining about you, or you were being sent critical letters directly? Neither of thos ethings is happening to Flem so the analogy is totally bollox.
