The tenet of his article was that, since the creation of the Wellfare state after the war, successive generations have had increasing expectations of what it would deliver. Despite knowing that the country couldn't pay for it, especially with the introduction of expensive technology and a huge increase in population and age, successive governments of ALL persuasion found it politically suicidal to curtail it. Th ecountry has been living beyond it's means for 50 years. The banking crisis exposed it. What this government are trying to do needs doing, it's just that they are trying to correct 50 year of economic mis-management in 4 which, as we all know, will leed to economic and social armageddon.
