Ferrets quite often lay up underground. If they get into a prolonged struggle with a rabbit and kill it (instead of bolting it, which is the idea) then they will usually feed on it and go to sleep. You can fit ferrets with radio collars so you can locate them and dig them out. Or you can try to lure them out and hope to get lucky
