hmm i hear live baiting dropboxes/cagetraps is a good way

never lost one of mine though. a good idea is to tie string to them if working them so you can follow the string and dig them out if you dont have radio collars.

unfortunately ferrets wont hang around for long as they are not that homely and get hungry so go off hunting, have a kip then move on hunting the next day.

might sound silly but depending on how your gundog is with ferrets you could search the hedgerows with the dog. a friend of mines dog "retrieved" his ferret once from a corn barn that it was lost in. it put up a struggle though so be warned.
