Listening to Jack Bannister on Talksport s'morning

I've learned that the Pakistani Mafia (whatever it's called) is the major force here. The 18yo may just not have had the fortitude to resist them, and this may be the case for a few others, too. It may not be fair to talk about greed: we don't know. Maybe we'll find out.

JB told one story of a player who found out, the day before Pakistan were to play India in the final of a (then) regular 3-way series including SL, that a number of his team mates had agreed to throw the game.

He told Imran Khan, the team captain at the time. Imran gathered together the match fees for the whole team, in cash, laid it on a table and called a team meeting. He announced that they were going to bet the whole lot on themselves to win - and apparently a lot of his team mates went very pale indeed, such was their fear of Mafia reprisals. Pakistan won the game convincingly: JB didn't say what happened after that, apart from to say that the 3way tourney hasn't been played since.
