drawn the abuse to the attention of the ref who could have warned not just the player, but the players captain and manager....

then if it happened again the ref should have sent him off, after all he had had fair warning. Refs are supposed to protect lino's, especially ones standing in doing the kids a favour.

I used to play div 1 eleven asdie in chelt - ages ranged from 17 upto 40 - - sometimes the nominated ref didnt turn up so i volunteered to ref or there wouldnt have been a game. I always spoke to the opposition to tell them I'd do my best but not to abuse me or I'd walk off - it always worked - sure on some contentious decision a player would start to have a go at me but nearly always that players captain would stop him going too far and back me up... similar should happen between lino and ref.
