I think people find the idea of

killing animals for fun distasteful, that's all.

To eat, as part of the food chain, is a bit different.

Personally, I think it's abhorrent to shoot a stag and stick its head on my wall just for giggles. Big argument to say that you could hardly complain if I shot your wife and stuck her head on my wall.
