Whats Behind This Gideons Bible Thing?

Any reason?
Are Hotels obliged to have them?
Do Gideons pay for the privilige?
What if the Hotel says "no, we don't want your bibles"-are they high powered Gideons out there who can make sure no-one ever stays at that Hotel again as a punishment?
I always look for it when I am in a Hotel-piss poor ones, good one, facking expensive ones...theres the bloody Gideons Bible. Weird.
