ok, this will probably bore you and make no sense but what I did

We spent:

Brazil - 10 days - not nearly long enough
Peru - One month - great amount of time, still missed out on loads though
Bolivia - 8 days - not nearly long enough but what can you do?
Chile - 2 weeks - it's a big place and we wasted our time I think. Worzel can give you some good advice I'm sure but we spent too long in the North when the South I believe is better.

Things I did which I can recommend:

Peru - Lima - couple of days is enough - stay in the centre - don't be afraid, lonely planet warns you off but it's the best area to stay imo.

Pisco - Chandelier trip - not bad

Ica - Desert trip - bloody hot, didn't know there was desert there.

Arequipa - if you enjoy walking in Canyons, Colca Canyon tour can be done from here. 3 days or so. Fantastic if you have comfy shoes and a good group to go with.

Nazcar - Nazcar Lines - interesting. Visited some ancient ruins - great

Puno - Lake Titicaca - stay on the islands with the locals - great.

Cusco - Inca Trail - it takes 4 days and is f**king tiring. But worth it. Again, take well worn in shoes that you are comfortable in. I didn't and regretted it from day 1. You will want atleast 2 - 3 days in Cusco though in addition to doing the trail (if you are going to do it, you could just get the train up there in 1 day) for before and after

NONE OF THIS IS IN THE NORTH, THERE IS LOADS UP THERE THAT I CAN'T TALK ABOUT.

Bolivia - Salt Flats trip - takes you into Northern Chile

Um......ok, I've just realised this is probably stupid. You will need to allocate yourself a rough amount of time in one place and then see how it goes when you get there. It's the best way in my opinion. Too much planning makes lmc a boring boy.
