I don't think they could under the rules, these were read out last night

As saints were in the drop zone, taking the points off then could be seen as 'getting away with it', so under the rules they had to wait to see what happens, as it was unclear if the deduction would cause relegation or not.
As they were already in the bottom three.

With Stockport, technically, applying it now COULD cause relegation so it HAD to be applied, under the current wording of the rules.
The FL can't choose to wait, they can only wait if it is unclear whether the points deduction will affect relegation.

I know it sounds stupid, and like i said, i would think they will tweak the rules now, and a caveat like

"requiring no more than a 3 goal swing in goal difference"

Or something, to make mathematical more realistic.
