That is a bit of a sweeping statement re Hick et al

Hick played 118 test innings and failed to reach a half century in 90 of them.

He simply couldn't cope with the glare and never fulfilled his huge talent at international level.

The others just weren't that great and, again, couldn't step up.

For some it works a little the other way.

Trescothick didn't have world beating county numbers but immediately took to international cricket like a duck to water.

Just the way it goes some times.
