You are correct of course, 99 (or whatever) % of civvies don't.

That's essentially the point is it not? We're not just talking about guns are we? I had a colleague prosecuted for t**tting a burglar with a golf club. I personally don't find that unreasonable, if I illegally entered someones house and got t**tted I'd think I had it comming. No? But, another point is, you were out there doing the job you were trained for, you weren't laying in your pit at 3am when someone enters your home, kids, missus etc. Totally different set of circumstances prevailing here.
