I'm genuinely interested in why people watch it

just as I'd be genuinely interested in understanding why people watch football if it was equally alien to me.
I'm not forcing you to justify what you do use for light entertainment, but obviously one is led to drawing simplistic or incorrect conclusions without sufficient information, in this case, provided voluntarily
