A good way round is to just ween yourself into it
ie, the first 3 lengths is confortable at once every four, but when it gets uncomfortable, breath a length every four, then one, then one again till you recover, then go back to four. Thus you stay in control
Breathing every stroke isn't a bad thing though, it's just good to learn to breath every four to sharpen your technique
