In the hope that a previously successful manager could recreate his success a second time. And the first four clubs, at least, have something going for them in large quantities that we don't - owners with money.
Two things that piss me off about attitudes to Peter Grant:-
1. He was not some random bum off the street like some people like to make out. He was a well-regarded and successful assistant manager. Many "Football people", held up as infallible keepers of the flame of knowledge, were convinced he would be a successful manager. People with far less pedigree than he have been successful.
2. He succeeded in this primary task of keeping a piss-poor team in the Championship. *Then* he was granted the time and money to reshape the squad as he saw fit. The board didn't blindly throw money at him - he EARNED the right to do so by succeeding.
