You're right about the chronology

Up to 2004 we were always a decent side - there or thereabouts.

Some years we were better than Spain or Germany or France or Italy or Argentina or Holland... but never all at the same time, sadly.

But since 04 we have been made to look a lot more average and the despair of recent years makes it easy to forget how good we have been.
