For my mind, the difference is highlighted in that article below.

The games industry is still relatively young, however the average game player isn't a spotty 13 year old anymore. And, as the technology improves, the level of detail and interactivity has improved also.

Playing games like GTA is for me no different than movies like Scarface, Reservoir Dogs, hell any of the Rambos or Die Hards etc were before - yes they're violent, but in a cartoon way. I would also argue that playing a computer game does more for one's motor skills than sitting watching a movie, and whilst we would love our kids to grow up doing the same things as we used to when we were young, the world around us all has changed now.
