At the level they're operating at though, I don't think Allardyce was properly backed at all. You're right, mind: it's frightening to think how much they've squandered via the constant hirings and sackings of recent years. And then there's Souness: he spent £50m on fees alone!
Picture the scene. You are a big, ambitious club, enjoying a spell of good, attacking football. Your current manager has done a very good job, is hugely popular and generally considered to be a damn good bloke too - but somehow, he just can't seem to break into the very top rank. What do you do?
If your name is 'Tottenham Hotspur', you appoint one of the finest coaches in Europe. If your name is 'Newcastle United', you appoint Graeme Souness. Go figure.
