It's only the last few seasons that this has changed

Although the big crowds have been around for a long time. German football really was stereotypically tedious and all the club sides played like the national side and Bayern have dominated for 10 years or so. And it's cheap to get in. Klinsmann really changed the national side by bringing in younger players and encouraging them to play a faster, riskier, less cynical game. The players aren't as good as they were 10 years ago but, for once, I was happy to watch them in the World Cup (although I did enjoy the schadenfreude of seeing them knocked out in the semis). Maybe that had a knock on effect in the league (although I haven't seen much German club football for a few years)
