it is now pretty much impossible to keep players who want to leave.

In those days you owned a player totally - even when their contract expired they couldn't go where they wanted. You retained their registration and were entitled to a transfer fee.

Also, the difference between what you can offer them wage-wise and what the richer teams can offer is much much greater, so they are far more likely to WANT to leave.
