You are a lecturer in Computing?

It's a bit of a myth that C++ is always slow - should be no difference to C in pure computation. And properly utilised it should be efficient (and I'm pretty certain ours could be improved somewhat). And then there is the poor C++/STL implementation in Visual C++ 6 that we're stuck with for the moment ...
