Um....it's pretty standard, actually
Most transfers, especially those for a largish fee are done half upfront, half in 12 months, add-ons as they fall due, the remainder if the player is sold in that time.
Using Ashton as an example, Wet Spam coughed ?3.5m up front, still owe us ?3.5m, plus the add ons. We paid Crewe half upfront, and then had to find the rest when we sold Ashton.
