I was lucky...

Believing I'd decided to pursue an academic career (as I had at the time), my parents were prepared to fund my PhD. I know how unbelievably hard it is to get funding, and certainly sympathise. My folks still don't know about my future plans: they're gonna get a bit of a shock!
