...is it just me that can see him following the exact same path as TheBigFeller described for Waghorn ?

When the new manager comes in, I would expect his entire reporting attitude to change. Due to his popularity now, he'll become, as mentionned below, the new Archant 'face'...which will bring the same cosying that Waghorn is derided for.
