Yes but you tell your employee their performance targets...

...not your customers.

And, if that employee had proved themselves capable of doing the job in the past, you'd give them further leeway to regain that situation, given that circumstances had changed many times since they had done so.

What we don't know, which leads to the wild speculation and bollocks posted on here, is the extent of that leeway.
