Even just widening the subject range and reduce the detail would

go a long way to spotting otherwise missed talents and interests, make more of teaching time (imagine the amount of things you learned in your A-levels which you never used again, especially post-university!), and encourage more kids to stay on after 16 and therefore go to university.
