This seems like a rational amount of effort for Reform to put into it

Just enough for them to be able to say "we have a vetting officer, so the problem you're talking about, regarding insane candidates, has been completely dealt with". But not enough to actually do anything about the problem in practice.

I think what Reform see in the data is that it doesnt really matter who they stand as candidates, they're mostly winning their target seats anyway, and they can simply ride out any negative coverage of whatever loon the press focus on next with no obvious consequence for how the party is viewed by their target market.

In fact, if they were being super rational, and if it was allowed, they'd be better off standing traffic cones in most places because i) traffic cones are less likely to have posted truly horrible things on social media ii) most traffic cones would outperform most Reform candidates are councilors and/or MPs and iii) I doubt it would stop people voting Reform at the next election.
