He's written a message to us fans....
n a few months’ time when I drive out of the training ground for the last time, I’m pretty sure that despite what will undoubtedly be an emotional and surreal experience, my overriding feeling will be one of immense pride.
Proud of the service that I have given to the club. Proud of the manner in which I have applied myself on every single day that I have worked here in my various capacities over the past 30 years. Proud of what I have achieved.
I will also be eternally grateful that I have had the opportunity to have such a long career at this fantastic football club.
I’ve got a million memories, and some will never leave me.
As a player, jumping over the advertising boards into the arms of the frenzied Barclay Enders after scoring a last-minute winner against Leeds in the Premier League in 1994. The ‘screamer’ that I scored against Luton on the opening day of the following season. And the 16 goals I scored during the 1996/97 season.
As an academy coach, the unforgettable night at Stamford Bridge when we won the FA Youth Cup against all the odds.
As first team manager, the two standing ovations that we received after the home game against Liverpool and the away game against Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea in 2014. And of course, the away win and celebrations with our fans at Portman Road against Ipswich the following season that took us to the top of the Championship.
As loans manager, the careers that I helped to develop, and the gratitude that I received for doing so from the likes of Josh and Jacob Murphy, Carlton Morris, Todd Cantwell, Harry Toffolo, Ben Godfrey, James Maddison, and many more.
As assistant sporting director, the unbreakable relationship with Stuart Webber, through both the good, and the tough times.
And recently as technical director, supporting Ben Knapper in similar fashion as with Stuart, during the dark times, and now the very exciting times.
Now is the time though for me to spend a bit more time with my wife and wonderful family, who have supported me unconditionally during my 41 years in professional football. And especially so now that we have three precious grandchildren.
I’ll still be keeping a very watchful eye though on how we perform next season of course, and indeed all future seasons, as I will always see this club as being, ‘my club’.
And with Mark Attanasio in control, Ben Knapper at the helm, and Philippe Clement in the dugout, I know that I can rest assured that it is in very good hands.
I’d like to thank all the players and the staff at the training ground and Carrow Road, as well as my fellow colleagues on the Executive Committee. I wish you all every success.
And finally, a simple message from me to the most important people of all, our brilliant supporters, who fill the stadium every week, season-on-season, and who club legends, Delia and Michael, rightly refer to as, ‘the best in the world’.
Thank you so much. It’s been a pleasure.
