to the idea that better teams ought to be properly rewarded for being better fir a longer period; ££ and bantz don't even come close to outweighing fairness in this case; if it ever happens to us that we come 3rd but lose (injury stricken ...) to some bunch of tossers who staggered into 8th, I don't think many people would be very pleased
