As said below, making it clear that Sarge is engineering a move.

We don't want to sell, but he's refused to play once, so can we rely on him?

Get the right bid and it gives the club a reason to agree a move, despite saying they won't.

He can also easily come back from this, as others have.
They'll be talking today, if they can clear the air and he then speaks to his team mates, could all be rosey tomorrow to an extent.

He may still want to go, but isn't burning bridges.
The other players are professionals, they will understand, to a degree, that players moving on is just part of the game, and there are times in a career they need to put themselves first.
