Sometimes I feel like I’m not making progress but recently, a man stopped me in the street here in Poole asking for directions to an address in Bournemouth, he spoke no English at all and was looking for his friend’s house, I recognised it as a Polish name, spoke to him in Polish and he was so stunned, so happy that I could direct him in Polish and talk about which buses to get and have a brief, basic chat. It was like the best thing that had happened to him all day. Of all the people he could have stopped in the street, I was so chuffed to have been able to help him.
