Companies like Opta, Stasbomb, Wyscout, etc have the own proprietary models, however the
initial data input i.e. attempt location, type of attempt (left foot, header, etc.), assist type (cross, through ball, rebound etc.) is input manually.
Plenty of room for variance and as with any statistic the usefulness is in how it is interpreted and used.
