Having spent 50 years working on the supply of safe
drinking water in East Anglia as well as Europe, much of Asia and the Caribbean I have to say that's a really good summary of why we don't have desalination in the UK or Europe. Our standard line was "only the Arabs can afford it". We looked at building a plant just outside Kings Lynn and one at Felixstowe many years ago but just couldn't afford to run it. We even did a study looking at using generators but again the cost was astronomical.
