Here is a really good summary of the current state of immigration

User Posted Link

A key point: The UK is not out of line with other countries.

It is notable that the small boats migration is about 30-40%
of the asylum immigation (see also here: User Posted Link

In other words the vast amount of immigration to the UK is legal and to a certain, extent, encouraged.

The way in which small boats dominates the discourse is testement to the power of the right wing to set the agenda.

The difficult converstation that we need to have is that much of this immigration is needed. Health and care in particular would collapse further without immigration. Our universities are also on the brink, so cutting back on foreign students will push many under.

Furthermore, we are an aging society so we are going to need working aged immigration to support the retirement and care that many of us are expecting in the coming years.

So yes, we do need a proper debate about immigration, but it needs to be far more than 'stop the boats'.
