Your statement is wrong re WW2:
Actually the US naval forces were escorting Allied merchant ships (pre the attack on Pearl Harbour) to a longitude that passed through Iceland. They didn't have to do that.
The US also supplied ships and material via Lend Lease prior to getting involved in WW2. They didn't have to do that.
On an individual basis a few US pilots also flew in the Battle of Britain, when every trained fighter pilot was crucial.
