Comes back to why have we sacked Smith ‘now’

Official answer: to give the best chance of promotion

So that really limits you to a replacement that ideally knows English football, knows the league we are trying to get out of, and can hit the ground running right now and not in a few weeks (or months!).

If this was an end of season reset (like should have been done on relegation and should happen if we don’t go up) I’d be more open to the idea of spending the time trying to identify the next Farke and taking a punt on some promising ‘rising star’ manager.

But in January, when we need immediate results if we’re trying for promotion?

There are going to be limited options. *Particularly* if we are trying to avoid chunky compensation (or lengthy negotiations around the same).

Wagner ticks a lot of the boxes for what we need *right now*. I’d chuck him a healthy & heavily incentivised 6+12+12 month contract and see what he can do. Reassess in the summer if it hasn’t worked out.
