Hi Pixie, how exciting! Right at the end of August? I wonder if you’ll go up a few days
early and catch the end of the Fringe? (I’m not sure your dog would appreciate to Fringe mind - but it is fun if you’ve not been before!)
Will you be travelling from Norwich? There is no flight up there at the moment so we have been catching the train when we’ve gone up. You have to change at Peterborough and one big tip is to buy the ticket into parts – Norwich to Peterborough and then Peterborough to Edinburgh. Somehow they wanted to add an extra hundred pounds onto the ticket if you try and do it all in one go! Last time the Peterborough to Norwich bit was just £13 return. (I think 1st class return was around £80 from Peterborough to Edinburgh)
Trains to Edinburgh get really crowded in August (especially when the fridge is on) but you will be fine if you book early. We treated ourselves to 1st class last time on the Peterborough to Edinburgh bit and it was wonderful! 2nd class was rammed with people and cases but we had a lot of space, Wi-Fi and free food and drink all journey! But you could see what the prices are like and decide. It’s a lovely route via the east coast 😊
I think Stansted is probably the closest now if you want to fly – but that seems like such an effort. There are some pretty cheap train options from London, but of course you would need to get there.
I’m sorry I can’t help with places to stay outside Edinburgh but I would imagine they would be plenty, especially if you go after the Fringe finishes and you would expect prices to drop at this point as well. I think you’d find plenty of places in and around Edinburgh to visit for the week. Dundee, Sterling, and Glasgow are all a quick train ride away as well as beautiful coast and countryside. Edinburgh is worth at least a couple of days if you’ve not visited!
Not sure how helpful this has been but it looks like you’ve got plenty of time to plan things. Let me know if I can be of any more help!
