I have to deal with the same stuff most days!
I usually go with a bunch of guff rather than excuses.
Tell them you’ve made mistakes, but so have they - it’s a partnership after all. Etc etc. they usually welcome the honesty and you can move o. Pretty quick.
Tell them to f*** off of course if they ever cancel the contract with you!
