We know it’s not but it still had the core of a team that had been promoted easily and if Smith is as good a manager as Webber suggested, he should have been able to maximise the strengths of those players. Instead we’ve just trundled along with no signs of improvement and the constant refrain of needing time and his own players. This isn’t a plea for Farke but if we thought the only way to make a successful change would be to change everything then it seems somewhat contradictory to all that Webber has stated about our approach.
I don’t think it’s as simple as wrong manager or wrong players but something is wrong in this mix. And a bad opening game doesn’t mean anything except when it looks awfully like the preceding season of bad games.
