I actually have invented something useful. I developed a technique for predicting spontaneous combustion in coal seams by data collecting in mining pit for a year at different locations where we saw spon com exist. I then found common characteristics in the coal, wrote an algorithm to screen exploration data to pick up those characteristics in bore core samples. Then used that data along with its spatial data to create polygon zones of likely spon com areas. So far had a 100% success rate in 2 years.

Political spiel for those about to jump in….

This is for metallurgic coal mining. I have to make that distinction these days due to the perception around coal burned for energy, which is totally different to met coal. Met coal is still essential to humanity for now, thermal coal is not and should be left in the ground
