Tech heads: Digital notepads etc

the brief: Started a Big New Job recently which requires constant jotting down of notes of various importance, topics and confidentiality. My traditional method of using a paper notepad (and sticky notes, backs of envelopes, etc etc) is letting me down BADLY and I currently have 5 notepads on the go. I am bound to forget the important just one when I need it. And my new puppy has just shredded one of them, is sat beside the mess with a very pleased look on his face, and is eying up the others...

Is there something out there (tablet etc) that will let me write on its screen with a stylus and record the notes /some sort of filing system (ideally transcribed into readable font but I'm not sure the tech exists to translate my spider scrawl).

Needs to be a separate device to the laptop I work on.

Alternatively does anyone want a 10 m/o working cocker puppy??
