Well I should first clarify that by 'close' I mean close on the sky as we see it.

It's actually a star system in our own galaxy and so pretty much just as far from M31 as we are!

I say it's close - it's fairly close. If you held your arm out straight in front of you and made a fist the width of your fist on the sky is probably about how far separated they are.
