when the new Trademarks Act was brought in. Many clubs registered their logos as trademarks around this time (Norwich were actually way ahead of the curve, doing so back in 1972)
Arsenal dumped their heraldic logo because it really is very weak with regard to copyright (you can't claim ownership of heraldic symbols). Many other clubs have followed suit, with only a few holding out
