Problem is no obvious other candidates

Root aside, there are few guaranteed a starting place apart from Jimmy, who is not the skipper type and coming to the end of his career. The person with the most captaincy experience at county level is probably Moeen, but they mess him around and don’t always play him. Stokes, when fit, could do without the added pressure. Buttler undeserving of a test place IMHO but us the vice captain. So basically we’re stuffed at present, at least in tests (plenty of options in white ball cricket).

So God knows where we go now.
