I think his point is that if the lack of transfer fee is offset by paying extortionate

wages, then banging the drum about how clever we've been to pick up a great player on a "free transfer" isn't really the whole story

So with Pookster - the one thing that is constantly said about him in the MSM is that we got him on a free. Wow, clever old Norwich. But if the fuller picture we persuaded him to join us by agreeing (say) a three year contract at £5m* a year [*made up numbers], it makes you see the "free transfer" in a slightly different light.
